On Saturday afternoon, about 2,000 runners and walkers crowded South Allen Street, helping to raise more than $99,980 for charity.

Fraternity Beta Sigma Beta and sororities Alpha Phi, Alpha Sigma Alpha, Pi Beta Phi and Sigma Delta Tau partnered with autism awareness group Autism Speaks to organize the fifth annual "We Are... Curing Autism Now 5K Race/3K Walk." In the past four years, Penn State has raised more than $650,000.

"I want people to see how important [autism] is, because more and more children are getting it every year," organizer Zach Asbury (junior-political science) said.

The event kicked off with DJ Drew Shannon from 105.9/106.9 Qwik Rock, one of the media sponsors for the event, encouraging the runners and the walkers.

"I want those involved to take a sense of pride in knowing they've helped kids across the nation and the world with autism," Shannon said.
