The Founders' Award Honoree:
The Founders’ Award, given annually to honor a brother’s outstanding service to the fraternity and accomplishments in the community, is well suited for Gary Brandeis ’88.
Gary has been an active member of the Alumni Association since graduating in 1988, was Alumni President from 1997 – 1999 and has been a mentor to many Beta Sigs informally and through the mentor program. While a student at Penn State, Gary held various positions at Beta Sig including Auditor, Regatta Treasurer, and most notably Pledge Class President (my influence on Marc Topaz in particular). He was also involved with Dance Marathon as a “Blue Visor” for 2 years. Gary likes to think he was part of the 20% that did 80% of the work at the house.
Gary started his career at Price Waterhouse and after completing the CPA exam, left public accounting for a career in real estate. Twelve years ago, he started his latest venture – Real Estate Capital Management and more recently, the Scholar Hotel Group. The primary focus of the business is buying, developing or redeveloping hotels that are close to major colleges and universities. The company has hotels at Penn State, West Virginia University, Syracuse University and a soon to be announced second hotel at Penn State. Gary’s companies and properties have hired many Beta Sigs over the years.
Gary is an active member of the Penn State Hillel Board and has led their efforts to build a new 20,000 square foot student center in downtown State College. It is currently under construction and is expected to open in 2021. Gary has been married to Jill (thank you!) for over 25 years and has two children – Hope (18) and David (16). They reside in Villanova, PA.

David A. Lee ‘74 Memorial Brotherhood & Fraternalism Award:
This award is given in memory of David A. (“Gimp”) Lee in recognition of a Beta Sig who encompasses all the aspects of friendship and brotherhood. This year’s award goes to Paul Masalski ’78.
Paul served as his pledge class president and was a member of the Beta Sig Alumni board for several years after graduating. This includes running a Homecoming weekendand Founders’ Award dinner in the mid-80s. He is known to many as “Moose.” Appropriately, his Big Brother was “Gimp.”
Paul is an Investment Advisor Representative, Vicus Capital, Inc., a Federally Registered Investment Advisor headquartered in State College, PA. He is a member of the Society of Financial Service Professionals (SFSP) and served as President of the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of SFSP.
Paul helps clients manage their expectations by working with a group of professionals that help develop and assist in designing retirement strategies along with sound money management. His mission is to help clients attain financial peace of mind. Paul lives in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania with his wife Marybeth and is thankful to have two wonderful boys, Michael and Zachary. He enjoys fishing and loves the game of baseball.
